About
Sonia Anker is a contemporary artist, born 1993 in Poland, working primarily in large-scale abstract painting.
She holds formal training from the Academy of Fine Arts and Aalto University in Finland, where she developed her interest in expressive mark-making, color relationships, and material exploration.
Her practice focuses on abstraction as a language for interpreting internal states, memory, and sensory experience. Rather than depicting recognizable subjects, her work centers on gesture, movement, and layered tonal transitions. Through controlled composition and intuitive process,
Sonia works between control and gesture, allowing the painting to evolve naturally.
Color plays a key role in her work. Deep blues, muted neutrals, soft gradients, and occasional gold or warm hues create depth, contrast, and atmosphere. The result is artwork that feels both calm and dynamic—inviting viewers to engage emotionally and visually without requiring literal interpretation.
Sonia’s paintings are collected privately and used in interior and architectural environments due to their versatility and strong spatial presence.
Her studio is located in Träskändan kartanon puisto, Espoo, where visits are available by appointment.
Artist Statement
“My work is guided by process. Each painting begins without a defined outcome and develops through layering, reduction, and adjustment. I am interested in how gesture and color can communicate mood and presence without narrative. My goal is to create paintings that offer space, atmosphere, and emotional resonance.”
